Mary E. Mattivi, 55, of Glen Hazel Road, St. Marys, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born, May 11, 1969 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Siegfried J. and Nancy Distler Engelberg. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1987. Mary furthered her education at Penn State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Mary enjoyed her career as a teacher. She started her teaching career at Holy Rosary School in Johnsonburg then spent a couple of years at Fox Township Elementary School before her start at South St. Marys Street Elementary School, where she spent the last seventeen years. Mary had a true passion for teaching that had a profound impact on many young lives. Through teaching, she valued the many strong friendships in which she cultivated.
On February 10, 1996 in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, she married her best friend, Anthony Mattivi, who survives.
Along with her loving husband, Mary is survived by her two children: Abby Mattivi and Casey Mattivi (Maura Fledderman), both of St. Marys; her sister Amy Dietz (Gary) of Corry, PA; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Ehrensberger Mattivi of St. Marys; brothers-in-law, Michael Mattivi (Judy) of Sarver, PA and Todd Mattivi (Tracy) of St. Marys; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Edward Mattivi, and a nephew Nicholas Mattivi.
Along with her passion for teaching, Mary had many interests. She enjoyed scrapbooking and card-making with her friends. She must have every moment captured in one of her many scrapbooks around the house. She took great pride in her home and property and enjoyed hosting parties and family reunions. Mary always kept the door open for anyone who wanted to visit. She enjoyed her time swimming with her mother, visiting Erie to shop with her mom and sister, and taking a moment for herself to get her nails done. She was a kind and generous person and her love for her family was remarkable. She always had time to attend everyone’s games, events, and milestones. She was there for them all!
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10:00AM with Rev. Ignatius Camello, O.S.B., celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Tony & Family, I am so very sorry for the loss of Mary. When a loss comes that is so close, the only thing I’ve found to help is remembering all the good times. She was a great girl even back in high school, proof is in the wife, Mother, and teacher everyone new and loved. She left a fantastic legacy with her family and all the students who she helped shape and educate. I will pray for you and your family.

Tony, Casey and Abby,
I am so sorry to hear about Mary. I worked with her at Holy Rosary. We had so much fun. Then I was fortunate to work with her again at South St. Marys Elementary School. Through the years we would see each other every so often. We would catch up on what we were doing and talk about our families. She always said how special all of you were to her. I had her in my prayers every day. I will miss her. She is at peace now and in heaven. May you too find peace. Remember all the good times you shared and the funny things that you did together. It will truly put a smile on your faces. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
