Roy L. Johnson | 87

Roy L. Johnson, 87, of 695 Washington Road, St. Marys, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, after a brief illness.

He was born July 14, 1933, in Ridgway, son of the late Rudy and Cecilia Geer Johnson.  Roy was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Ridgway High School, Class of 1951.  He was a former employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company and a retired employee of Mersen, retiring in 2013, working for 63 years of his life.

On June 22, 1957, in the Sacred Heart Church, Roy married Mary Jane Rigard, who preceded him in death on December 3, 2020.

He is survived by two daughters: Cindy Simchick and her husband Ken and Lynn Schatz and her husband Rick, both of St. Marys; two sons: Lee Johnson at home and Rusty Johnson and his wife Carole of St. Marys; and by a daughter-in-law, Rose Anne Leightner of Ridgway.  Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: Brandon Johnson (Jenna), Daniel Johnson, Justin Johnson, Rachael Johnson, Scott Schatz (Alyssa), Todd Schatz (Dana), Andrea Grinnell (Brandon), Jessica Pistner (Allen), Gregory Simchick, and Steven Simchick; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Geraldine Esposito of Brockway and Maxine Piccirillo and her husband Joe of Ridgway; and by two brothers: Clifford “Skip” Johnson of St. Marys and Francis Johnson and his wife Barb of Portland Mills.

In addition to his wife and parents, Roy was preceded in death by a son, Matthew J. Johnson on June 29, 2015; a sister, Patty Chatfield; and by a brother, Gerald Johnson, in childhood.

Roy was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, where he served as an usher.  He was a Veteran of the United States Army and had served on the Board of Directors for Oak Manor.

Family was everything to Roy.  He loved family gatherings, especially during the holidays.  He also loved camping, hunting, fishing, trapping, and spending time at camp.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, March 6, 2021, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Saturday morning, from 8:30 until 9:30 AM.
