Steven C. Gerg | 68

June 15, 1952 - April 2, 2021

Steven Gerg, 68, of 420 Washington Street, St. Marys, passed away Friday, April 2, 2021, at Penn Highlands Elk after a brief illness.

He was born June 15, 1952, in St. Marys, son of the late John D. and Mary L. Wildnauer Gerg.  Steve was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1970.  He was a retired employee of GrafTech.

He is survived by his daughter, Stacy Merrow (Brian) of Clearfield; his son, Steven Gerg (Julie) of Homer, NY; by Stacy and Steven’s mother, the former Chris Gnan of Clearfield; by his daughter, Sarah Augustine of Corning, NY; by three grandchildren: Lilly Merrow, Ella Merrow, Dacota Gerg; by his brother, Richard F. Gerg of St. Petersburg, FL.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Parks.

For 50 years, Steve was a committed member and fire chief of the Crystal Fire Department.  After graduating high school, he entered the United States Navy and served on the USS Tripoli and USS Blue Ridge.  He was a retired Army Reserve Captain and was in the Army National Guard.  He was a former member of the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail, past president of the St. Marys American Legion, and the former secretary of the Vietnam Veterans of America Bucktail Chapter 720.  He was Chairman for the Bicentennial parade in St. Marys and was a dedicated instructor at the Tri-County Fire School.  In his free time, Steve was an avid hunter and fisherman and really enjoyed going to camp with the gang.

Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in the Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, April, 6, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

A private visitation for the family will be held at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Crystal Fire Department, 319 Erie Ave., St. Marys, PA 15857 or to the Vietnam Veterans of America Bucktail Chapter 720, PO Box 220, St. Marys, PA 15857.

    I’m privileged to have had the chance to become friends with Steve. I loved seeing what he baked or cooked on Facebook. My husband is in the fire dept & learned a lot from Steve. Hard to believe he’s gone.

    I’m really missing this this guy in my neighborhood. After 41 yrs. of living across the street from 421 and way back to the days of him being my neighbor on Hall Ave. just know he was one of my best neighbors and a good friend to have. I always felt safe with him around. Sorry for your loss.
