Sue Ann Spiher, 74, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 438 North Michael Street, St. Marys, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2021, at Elk Haven, after a lengthy illness.
She was born September 26, 1946, in Ridgway, daughter of the late William and Mary Lou Cuneo Fleming. Sue was a lifelong resident of the area, a graduate of Elk Christian High School, Class of 1964, and also a 1968 graduate of Villa Maria College in Erie. She was a retired teacher of the St. Marys Parochial Elementary School, retiring after 41 years of service.
On July 19, 1969, in the St. Leo’s Church in Ridgway, Sue married Andrew R. Spiher, who preceded her in death on August 18, 2007.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Spiher of St. Marys; her brother, Pat Fleming of Ridgway; her brother-in-law, Daniel Tate of Weedville; and by nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Sally Tate.
Sue was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading and she loved to pray the Rosary. Sue volunteered at the Penn Highlands Elk Gift Shop and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
There will be no visitation.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to The Family House of Pittsburgh, 5001 Baum Boulevard, Suite 545, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
Mrs. Spiher is someone I will never forget! She was my teacher in 3rd grade and one of the best I’ve had. She was so kind and fun and often called her students “sunshine.” My deepest condolences to the family.

Jen, I had your mom as a teacher many years ago for third grade (and your dad – back when the Bills always made it to the Super Bowl, and I was happy to root for them in his honor in the play offs this year!) and she had a lasting impact on me to this day. I am so sorry for you loss, your mom was a wonderful woman.

I had much admiration for Sue. As a teacher, she was one of the few who was able to teach and manage my daughter who had multiple mental disabilities. When I saw her at the nursing home, she was always so nice and cheerful. My condolences to those near and dear to her.

She was a wonderful friend, and treated my sons like gold. She brought out the best in every child. May she rest in peace.
Sue was a wonderful teacher and a dear friend who will be sadly missed by all who shared these memories with her. I feel so blessed to have known Sue. I always admired her great strength and courage that saw her through life with a smile and a kind word for all those she knew. When I think of Sue this is how I will remember her and I’ll smile…
